Before we begin!!!

The Smokin' Aces playlist is now available to follow and stream on Spotify, it'll be updated weekly with all the tunes featuring in these blog posts.

This entry contains possibly the only song that I've ever hated, and then come to love, called 'Lazy'. This is no joke, I literally hated this record for many, many years. Every time it played on the radio, I'd become agitated. The only thing I liked were the intro synth stabs 'Dum-Dum-Dum'... but at the same time, hearing them meant that I knew what was coming... "I'mmmmmmmmmmm wicked and I'm lazyyyyyyyyyyyyyy"... shut the fuck up. The most annoying song on the radio. This was 2002 by the way, I was 11 going on 12; so I was usually the passenger in my dad's car whenever this would come on. This song was ruined further by my dad singing along with the lyrics; together, the vocalist, David Byrne and my dad essentially whipped up three to four minutes of internal rage every time I heard this, usually on the journey to/from school.

Excuse my foul language.

The British House music duo that created this record are known as X-Press 2 (Darren House and Darren Rock); the track was a collaboration with Talking Heads frontman/vocalist, Byrne. As mentioned previously, it was released in 2002 and was pretty popular here in the UK (reached number two on the UK Singles Chart); it felt like it was always on the radio, much to my displeasure at the time.

Fast forward, about six or so years, and the track really started to grow on me. It would crop up less and less on the radio/TV/online, yet, it would remind me of good times in the years gone by. You can't beat a nostalgic trip, so I think that this is how Lazy became to be a record I'm fond of. These days, I consider it to be a decent, and catchy, commercial House music record.

I've never really bothered to check out any of X-press 2's music, so, I should probably dive in and see if I can discover any other decent productions by the act! Either way, you can find Lazy in the Smokin' Aces Spotify playlist. Check it out.
